We’re always ready to talk about our successes and achievements when interviewing. But, what about the questions that focus on our mess ups. Questions like…give me an example of a project that you were on that failed or tell me about a time when you tried to accomplish something but failed. Now, I know what you’re thinking – why on earth would I want to tell an employer about my goof up. But relax, we all make mistakes and employers know this. What the interviewer is really looking for is your ability to learn from your mistakes and apply those same principles in subsequent situations. These questions require well thought out answers. So, start thinking about how you’ll position one of the mistakes that you’ve made as a building block for your present and future success. How will you turn that negative into a positive? It’s all in how you spin it.

Below are some examples of tough interview questions that you should be prepared to answer.

1. If I asked your supervisor to tell me about your weaknesses, what would they say?
2. Tell me about the biggest mistake that you’ve made.
3. Tell me about a poor decision that you made.
4. Tell me about a time when you were unable to get a job done.

The key to handling negative questions effectively is to tell the interviewer at the end of your story what you learned and how you have applied what you learned to subsequent situations. Notice that questions 2 through 4 are behavioral based questions. So, you must provide a full STAR answer. If you haven’t read my post on Behavioral Interviewing, check it out. I provide the formula for answering these types of questions and an example answer.
