Eye contact is one of the most powerful body language tools that you can use in an interview. As a non-verbal tool, it’s just as important as the words that you actually speak. Without a single word, it communicates confidence, sincerity, respect and integrity. It also connects you with the person that you’re speaking with, which is extremely important in the interviewing process. In fact, recruiters often list poor eye contact as a common reason why applicants fail to make it through the interviewing process. So, in your next interview, make sure that you maintain great eye contact…blinking is allowed! To avoid being too intense, occasionally look slightly away, and then back to the interviewer.
Quick Career Tip: Great eye contact is not only beneficial in the interview. You should practice using it in every aspect of your professional life. Whether you’re having a conversation with a colleague, manager, or subordinate, always maintain great eye contact to appear honest and confident. As both of these qualities are essential for any leader and rising superstar!
This is such an invaluable habit. When I was teaching, I used to drill this into my students daily! On a personal note, my mamma also schooled me that this works well with the ladies – especially if she’s well endowed. She stressed to me how important it is to maintain eye contact with a Lady on a date because it shows that you respect her and that you’re interested in what she’s saying. Over the span of three career fields, eye contact has been the cornerstone of my network building, interpersonal skills.

Good to see you mentioned that it’s OK to look away slightly for a brief moment. I tend to do that (look down or off to the side) when I’m thinking or pondering.
